Asylum Street Reconstruction - Norwich, CT

The main purpose of this project was to reconstruct the entire 6000 linear foot length of Asylum Avenue, a major urban arterial street, to meet AASHTO design standards. The existing street layout had serious horizontal sight line deficiencies. Major horizontal and vertical realignment of the roadway was required.

The project included the removal of one building to improve a particularly hazardous curve. Additional property acquisitions were required to relocate the roadway to meet design standards. The existing pavement was deteriorated due to heavy traffic volume and inadequate surface and subsurface drainage. A new storm drainage system with underdrains was designed for approximately 75% of the project and the pavement structure received full depth replacement.

Asylum Street is located along the Yantic River. Extensive environmental permitting was required including State DEP Stream Channel Encroachment and local and Army Corps of Engineers Inland/Wetland Permits.

This project also included traffic studies, a warrant analysis for traffic signalization, and the design of the signalization of the intersections of Asylum Avenue with New London Turnpike and Sherman Street.

The Scope of Services included: Survey, Soil Testing/Borings, Channel Encroachment Permit, Traffic Design, Roadway and Pavement Design, 12" to 36" diameter Storm Sewers, Sanitary Sewers with Appurtenances, Sidewalk and Driveway Replacement, Landscaping, Easement and Taking Maps, Local and Federal Inland Wetland Permits, Contract Administration and Limited Inspection.
