Roadway Drainage Projects - Bristol, CT

Ivy Brook Drainage Study and Improvements:

Ivy Brook conveys runoff from a 1.6 square-mile area through the downtown area of the City of Bristol. The brook passes through a series of structures and buildings. These structures diminish the hydraulic capacity of the natural channel resulting in the flooding of upstream streets. High flow velocities causes scour and erosion which threatened the foundations of the buildings. Cardinal Engineering Associates was retained by the City of Bristol to perform a hydrologic analysis of the drainage basin to determine 25-year, 50-year and 100-year design flows, make a condition assessment and hydraulic analysis of existing conduits, analyze various alternatives and design all necessary improvements.

The solution of this problem involved the diversion of Ivy Brook through a new 10' x 5' box culvert, 970 linear feet in length. A special inlet structure was designed to increase the capacity of the culvert. Cardinal Engineering provided complete services for this project including survey, design, subsurface exploration, hydrology, hydraulics, easement mapping and preparation of final contract documents. We also assisted the City of Bristol in obtaining Water Diversion permits from the Connecticut DEP and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local Inland Wetlands Commission.
