Replacement of Davis Street Bridge - Hamden, CT
Cardinal Engineering Associates provided Construction Contract Administration and full-time Resident Engineering Services for the replacement of the Davis Street Bridge over Lake Whitney in Hamden, Connecticut. This project was funded under the Federal Local Bridge Program.
The bridge has a span of 150 linear feet.Lake Whitney is a public water supply reservoir. Cardinal was responsible for monitoring the contractor’s compliance with environmental permits.
Davis Street is an important road linking the eastern and western portions of the town. To reduce traffic disruptions this project was built in two phases. The northern half of the existing bridge was supported on temporary H- piles while the southern portion was removed and replaced.
Construction of the foundations which were supported on H-piles required the installation of large cofferdams in the lake. Dewatering was made very difficult because of shallow bedrock on the western side of the lake. The project also required the temporary support and replacement of existing water and gas mains and vital ATT fiber optic construction conduit bank.
