Industrial Site Planning - New Haven, CT

Long Warf Drive Extenstion Project

Connecticut Cardinal Engineering Associates completed the design of a major industrial arterial road adjacent to New Haven Harbor. Several alternate layouts for Long Wharf Drive were evaluated during preliminary design.

The purpose of this project was to provide a link between the Sargent Drive Industrial Area, on the north side of Interstate 95, to the large industrial zone located in the East Street area of the city. It also required opening up the former site of the Sargent Corporation plant demolished during construction of the Interstate for industrial development.

This area is now the home of the New Haven Maritime Center, a large SNET facility, Connecticut Limousine, the Sportshaven Teletrack, the Rusty Scupper Restaurant, and the New Haven Harbor information center.

Long Wharf Drive is a 5,300 linear-foot, 50-foot wide 4-lane road, constructed with granite curbing, 10-foot wide sidewalks and street lights.

The project also included the construction of a 2500 linear foot long, 60 inch diameter storm sewer interceptor, 3000 lf of storm sewers ranging in size from 15 to 24 inch diameter, 2500 lf. of 24 inch diameter sanitary sewer, underground electrical and telephone conduits, as well as water and gas mains.

Due to unstable soil conditions, the 60 inch storm sewer interceptor was installed on concrete cradles supported on timber
piles.

Cardinal Engineering provided all engineering services for this project from the survey stage to conceptual planning to final design and construction.

Resident Engineering. and Construction Contract Administration were provided throughout construction which was completed in three separate construction contracts.
