Flood Control Project - Meriden, CT
Harbor Brook Conduit
The Meriden Redevelopment Agency commissioned Cardinal Engineering to design site improvements for the downtown area prior to its commercial development. An important part of this work was the control of flooding and the treatment of Harbor Brook which crosses the site.
Construction of a flood control structure upstream required consideration of hydraulics, required capacity, and reduced release rate post construction.
Cardinal Engineering designed a double reinforced concrete box culvert with the structural strength to support loads from proposed buildings including the HUB retail shopping plaza. The culvert is 22' x 8' and 1,200 feet in length. A few years later, Cardinal designed the improvement of an additional 500 feet of this brook that runs through a housing project site for the Meriden Housing Authority.
The open stretch of the brook that was rapidly becoming unsightly, littered, and unhealthy was enclosed in a reinforced concrete structure, the top of which was integrated into a landscaped recreational park.
