Willow Brook Flood Control Plan
Willow Brook flows for four miles through the center of New Britain to the Mattabassett River with a drainage area of 10 square miles. The purpose of this study was to develop a plan for the alleviation of acute flooding in a densely populated urban area.
The study included hydrologic analysis of the watershed for the 10, 25, 50 and 100-year storm events, a field survey and analysis of the hydraulic capacity of existing bridges, culverts and channels including hydrograph routing along channel reaches and through existing and proposed structures and the investigation of alternatives to determine the most cost-effective solution. The recommended plan of improvements included construction of a retention dam and other channel improvements, including replacement of culverts and canals and upgrading the storm sewer system. Cardinal Engineering assisted the City in obtaining funding from the State DEP and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
