Athletic Facility Site Planning - State of Connecticut
Sunnybrook State Park, Torrington CT
The vast area designated for infrequent, temporary floodwater storage presented the opportunity for the development of a unique recreational park. The special consideration of this project was to create an environment that should withstand submersion under a temporary lake condition.
The improvements included regulating the flood flow of the east branch of the Naugatuck River with the construction of a flood control dam and extensive passive recreational amenities such as walking trails, vistas, picnicking and stream fishing. A fish ladder was provided to promote upstream migration in the branch of the river.
Since river water was available, a swimming pond and a sandy beach were created on the site. A flood-proof building with toilet facilities and changing rooms were erected nearby with a water supply and disposal system compatible with the flood-prone area. Improvements to the parking facilities was also included.
Gillette Castle State Park
The State of Connecticut retained our firm to design a bulkhead, approximately 450 linear- feet in length, to stabilize the shoreline on the Connecticut River and a pile-supported pier with connecting walkway. The Bongassi wood pier design was to accommodate gangplank boarding of visitors from tour boats, and a small boat tie-up and fishing.
The State DEP was forced to abandon the project due to financial constraints.
Hammonasset Beach State Park
Improvements to the park consisted of widening, regrading and paving of approximately three miles of roads. Also included was the regrading and paving of an 80-space parking lot along with decorative wood-rail fencing.
