Columbus Park
Fifteen acres of flatland, the results of dumping on swampy soil, was not utilized because of the precarious quality of the foundation. Natural consolidation of the terrain, intervening years, and the pressure from interested citizens groups, caused a second, closer look be given to this area. Past settlement and new load tolerance levels were uncovered by in-depth soil investigations, making it was possible to design excavations and fills that would result in a stable, unsettleable surface. The design included three softball fields, one soccer field, and parking facilities. The tall, heavy-lighting poles are supported by piles driven through the soft dump material and resting on solid ground. The park has been in full use for the last several years and is the home of the Meriden Amateur Softball Association.
